water leaks and plumbing failures

Water leaks and plumbing failures are perhaps the most common loss suffered by homeowners. Water leaks can be visible or hidden behind walls and/or concrete flooring. It does not matter whether it is a continuous slow leak or a sudden broken pressurized pipe, water causes major damage to homes, and lead to the formation of mold. Even if the leak is hidden, you may be held liable by your insurance company. Plumbing failure is another common issue, especially here in Florida, where homes built before 1975 were built using cast iron piping. This cast iron piping system has exceeded its expected life, and now have become susceptible to breaks and cracking, leading to water backups occurring inside homes.

mOLD

You ever noticed these spots in and around your home. These are called mold spores. It takes 24-48 hours after an active water leak for mold to germinate and grow. Mold can be very dangerous and lead to allergy symptoms, coughing, lung infection, asthma, or even respiratory illness. One of the most dangerous molds to humans, is Stachybotrys, commonly known as “black mold”. Stachybotrys mold is dark greenish or black in color and has a slimy texture. It thrives in damp, wet areas with high humidity levels that maintain these environmental conditions for weeks. If you have black mold in your house, it is important to remove any elderly or children from your home to prevent any further exposure to these conditions.

HURRICANE DAMAGE

Hurricanes can be catastrophic with different various levels of destruction, depending upon the nature of the storm. However, even a category 1 hurricane can deliver hurricane force winds up to 95 Mph and could cause major damages in and around your home. These damages could include the dwelling itself, as well as other structures such as sheds and fences. Following a storm, it is possible that you may have suffered damages that may have not become visible for the homeowner as of yet. Some of these damages include damage to the roof itself as well as to windows and doors. Water only needs a microscopic opening to find a pathway into your home. Therefore, it is possible that damages may not be visible for some time following a storm.

FIRES

Fires can be devastating, whether small or large. Even a small kitchen fire can cause major damages through the entirety of your home. Smoke/soot can use the existing A/C vent as tunnels to disperse throughout your home.  As we all know, one of the most dangerous elements of a fire, is its smoke and soot. When combustion occurs during a fire, not all materials burn cleanly, resulting in smoke and soot. These waste products-solids, liquids, and gases may be composed of various chemicals which are harmful to your health. Leftover smoke/soot following a fire are more than just smelly and unsightly.
